Guide to Multi-factor authentication when signing in

This is a guide for setting up multi-factor authentication, this may be requested when you log in for the first time. If you are asked for a verification code but have not set up multi-factor authentication you will need to raise a call with the ICT self service helpdesk in order to reset your multi-factor authentication.


When signing on using SSO (NUH login) you may be asked to set up multi-factor authentication. If so you will see the screen shown below. Continue by clicking on the "Next" button.



This will take you to the following screen, asking how verification should be carried out. Clicking on the dropdown that says 'Authentication phone' gives three options, 'Authentication phone', 'Office Phone', and 'Mobile App'. While you may select the other options we recommend selecting 'Mobile App' if you are able to. In order to use the 'Mobile App' option you must have a mobile phone capable of installing the 'Microsoft Authenticator App'.



For reference we have included the appearance of the 'Office Phone' option here as well.




Selecting the 'Mobile App' option from the dropdown will take you to the following screen. Here you have the option of using either a verification code, where you will need to open your verification app and use the code found there, or receive notification for verification, where a notification will appear on your phone for verification. Once you have selected the option you wish to use please click on the "Set up" button.



This will take you to the following screen for configuring the mobile app. In order to set up the app you must install the Microsoft authenticator app and then open it. Inside the app you can then select to add a "Work or school account" and either scan the QR code by selecting "Use QR Code" and pointing the camera at the QR code on the screen (the QR code is the black and white image on the screen). If you are unable to use the QR code you can instead use the code and url listed below it. Once this is done there should be a "Nottingham University Hospitals" account page open with a one-time password code, this is a 6 digit number. If this is showing please select next, if not please repeat these steps.



Following the set up of your authenticator app you will need to enter the verification code from the mobile app on the next screen as shown below. The verification code changes every 30 seconds for security reasons. Once you have done this click verify to verify the set up of the app.



The next step then requests a mobile number in case you lose access to the mobile app through any means. Please input your mobile number and then click done.



The final stage will ask you if you wish to stay signed in, select the option you wish and you have logged in and set up multi-factor authentication and can begin to use the helpdesk.
